PS4 and Xbox 720 news and rumour roundup for this week

Next gen is finally here, or will be here after the Wii U launch, but there’s still a lot of time to go before we get some accurate information on Sony and Microsoft’s next-gen consoles.

First up, PS4 could have significant improvements:

“The right time to talk about new advances in hardware is when you can demonstrate a significant leap on the current experience, and something that is going to be attractive. That remains our philosophy. Beyond that we have nothing to say at this point,” SCE CEO Andrew House told MCV.

Analysts say 2013 release date for PS4 and Xbox 720 is a given:

[There’s a] high probability that PlayStation 4 and/or Xbox 720 will be out in late 2013. Based on various conversations we had at the conference, we believe it is all but a given that either Microsoft or Sony or both will launch their new consoles next year,” Sterne Agee’s Arvind Bhatia told Gi.biz.

Another analyst says Xbox 720 could be $99 “if the customer commits to a cable TV subscription for two years.”:

“It’s pretty clear to me that Microsoft intends to allow the Xbox 720 to function as a cable TV box, allowing cable television service providers to broadcast over the Internet through the box, with SmartGlass as the remote controller, and with the Xbox 720 using Windows 8 to split the TV signal into multiple feeds, allowing consumers to divert different channel feeds to different displays within the home,” Michael Pachter, analyst at Wedbush Morgan predicted.
