There are references to The Shining in first level (Super Mario Sunshine)
With a game like Mario you never expect a Stephen King reference to be present in any of the games, because it’s really creepy. However in Super Mario Sunshine, there are pretty obvious references to the shining in the game. For those not familiar with the book, at the end of the Stephen King novel, it says “a ghostly manta shape, floating away over the hotel. It was paper thin, like a shadow, and then broke into smaller forms before turning into smoke and drifting away.” In Super Mario Sunshine you destroy the Manta by squirting water, which in turn makes it break into smaller Mantas; this is an obvious reference to the novel and makes it much creepier.
