Apple are expected to announce the next iPhone, the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, later today, but this year has been a bit different than previous years of iPhone speculation- see, Apple usually launches a new phone, and then follows it up with a refinement a year later, called the ‘S’ model. A new phone usually comes with a design, and a fair few paradigm shifts, while the S model refines the rough edges in the new model.
This year, however, what with reports pointing to Apple keeping the same design for their phones, as well as there not being a whole lot of new features – because, it appears, Apple wants to save major updates for next year’s phone, which would be the tenth anniversary mode – there has been speculation that Apple are going with relatively minor updates. This in turn has prompted some to assume that the phone may not be called iPhone 7 (which would be the logical name after the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6s), but instead, an extension of the iPhone 6 brand- something like the iPhone 6SE.
But if these website leaks, coming to us courtesy of Reddit (via Eurogamer and Gadgets360), are true, then it seems as though that speculation has been incorrect- the phone this year will be called iPhone 7 (and iPhone 7 Plus) after all. I wonder how that will tie into next year’s purportedly much more major update.
