After a detailed overview of Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ stealth mechanics a couple of week ago, with the open world action RPG’s launch drawing ever closer, Ubisoft has published another gameplay overview, this time revealing a host of new details on the game’s combat.

The bulk of the overview is focused on the two protagonists – Yasuke and Naoe – and the different ways they will function in combat, but on top of that, it also reveals further details on skills, for instance. Full information on progression will be revealed later, but Ubisoft says that gaining levels and defeating specific enemies will earn players Mastery Points, which you’ll use to purchase abilities and skills (of both active and passive varieties) in Mastery trees.

Meanwhile, players will, of course, also encounter a number of different enemy types throughout their time in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. That will include outlaws, who lack training but can surprise you with unusual tactics, and also make use of brutes; Ronin, who are highly trained samurai without masters that will attack the player on sight; Samurai Daisho, who are a unique type of samurai found only in military castles, and tend to be the some of the toughest enemies, with some of the most rewarding loot on the other side; and Guardians, an elite group of samurai who appear when reinforcements are called upon, and present some of the game’s stiffest challenges in combat.

Enemies can also make use of a variety of different tactics when taking the player head on, from flurry attacks that deal unbreakable sequences of successive blows, to unstoppable attacks that cannot be blocked or parried, to employing a range of defensive actions.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows launches on February 14 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Stay tuned for more details and gameplay showings in the weeks leading up to its release.
