At CES 2025, Asus unveiled its new external GPU module that connects to PCs using Thunderbolt 5. Dubbed the Asus ROG XG Mobile, the latest eGPU will offer power equivalent to a GeForce RTX 5090 mobile chip.
The newest iteration of the Asus ROG XG Mobile also features various I/O options, including USB ports, an SD card reader, USB-C ports, and 5 Gbps ethernet connectivity. The XG Mobile will also support multiple monitors through DisplayPort 2.1 and HDMI 2.1 ports.
While Asus has revealed features of the new XG Mobile, it hasn’t yet announced raw performance numbers for the system. The system costs $2,199.99. Asus has also announced a similar system based on the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, priced at $1,199.99.
For context, these external GPUs are often targeted at users who like to have as much power as possible in their PC but can’t justify a full tower desktop PC that would take up space and lack the portability of a laptop. These eGPUs tend to be a great deal for users who would like to bolster their laptop’s hardware capabilities with more powerful graphics processing and still manage to stay portable.
The new Asus eGPUs make use of mobile versions of desktop GPUs recently unveiled by Nvidia under its new GeForce RTX 50-series lineup, which includes four new graphics cards that are slated to hit the market over the next couple of months.
