As a massive RPG that can keep you occupied for multiple hundreds of hours, Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t exactly short of content or features, but developer Larian Studios continues adding to it with its updates. The developer previously confirmed that the game’s seventh major post-launch patch would be bringing with it another major new feature in the form of official modding tools, and now it has revealed more details on when to expect that.

Larian Studios says Patch 7 will go live for Baldur’s Gate 3 in September, bringing official modding tools (and the previously mentioned new evil endings, among other things). Testing for the patch, however, is already underway, with Larian splitting the process up into two phases. Closed alpha testing for the patch kicked off today, on June 3, while a closed beta (for up to a total of a thousand players) will be going live at some point in July.

“With the intention of working through your feedback throughout the summer, it will give us time to polish off Patch 7 ready for release in September. In the meantime, we still have plenty coming your way, including some anniversary extravagance as we look back on the months since release,” the studio says. Meanwhile, work on other previously promised features, like photo mode and cross-play, is also still ongoing.

Back to mods, Larian says that though the ability to create mods will be available only to PC players, of the created mods, curated selections will also be made available to those on consoles. And how exactly will that process work?

“On PC, general stability and Terms of Service checks will be carried out before a mod becomes available in the game’s browser. On console, an additional curation process confirms which of these PC mods become available for cross-platform support,” Larian says. “While not all PC mods will become available for console, we’ll be sure to publish guidelines to help you understand what kind of content will pass our necessary checks – without blocking any unsupported creative mods on PC – so that we can continue supporting the modding community both inside and outside our official pipeline.”

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
