From Life is Strange to Vampyr, DON’T NOD games often place strong emphasis on choice and consequence mechanics, and the developer is doubling down on that with its upcoming action RPG, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden. A newly released developer diary highlights that aspect of the experience in particular, and offers new details on what players can expect.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden will focus on Antea Duarte and Red Mac Raith, experienced ghost hunters in love with each other. As Banishers, they’re sworn to protect the world of the living from the dead, but when Antea dies and returns as a ghost herself, they’re left with a difficult choice- do they let her pass on, or do they try and resurrect her? The core choice mechanics, it seems, will arise out of that, because to do the latter, Red will have to kill as many people as possible so he can use their souls to pour into Antea.

The dev diary highlights a quest from the game where its choice and consequence mechanics will come into play, where Red encounters a woman who is being haunted by the ghost of her dead husband. An abusive partner in life, in death, he’s out for vengeance against the man his former wife fell in love with and replaced him with. As per DON’T NOD, here, players will be able to choose whether they want to banish the dead husband, help him ascend and pass on, lay the blame on the wife or her new partner, or perhaps even sacrifice one of them to help in his quest of bringing Antea back.

As per DON’T NOD, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden will have five different endings that will “reveal and reflect the sum of the many decisions you had to make”. Check out the video below for more details, and to see a couple of the different ways the aforementioned quest can play out.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden will launch on February 13 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
