The game was officially released for the PS4, Xbox One and PC on October 21, 2016.
Development
In June of 2015, DICE announced it was working on a new game. While many people knew it was likely to be another Battlefield game, the setting and the specifics were kept secret. In January of 2016, EA announced a new Mass Effect, Titanfall 2 and an untitled Battlefield game would all be released before the end of the fiscal year. The game was officially announced on May 6, 2016 after a number of leaks had hinted at the game’s name and setting. An official trailer was used as the way to announce the game using scenes from the game and music from the remixed Seven Nation Army song from the Glitchmob.
Battlefield 1 had an open beta which began on August 31, 2016 and ended on September 8, 2016. The beta was supposed to help iron out any bugs and glitches that might be in the game just a few months before it was set to be released. The game was also released early, with part of the multiplayer and single player modes several days early through the EA Access program. The game was officially released on October 21, 2016 on the Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
Story
Battlefield 1 tells a World War 1 story by blending several different stories together. These stories are a separate set of missions that eventually come together to create the entire game. Through these stories players take on the role of several different soldiers from a bunch of different countries and locations that were all involved in the “great war.”
The prologue to all of these stories is called Storm of Steel and puts the player in the role of a Harlem Hellfighter. The fighters are going up against waves of german soldiers and must try to survive as much as possible. If the player does indeed die, the story is told from a different perspective and a different soldier. This continues until the player eventually finishes the prologue and that opens to the other stories.
Through Mud and Blood is a story that centers around Danny Edwards, who is a former limousine driver who enlists in the war as a tank driver. The story is set in and around the Battle of Cambrai during the Hundred Days Offensive. Edwards and the rest of the tank crew are assigned to power through German lines during this offensive. As the battle rages, the player will meet and get to know the other members of the tank brigade and along the way you’ll have to make some decisions that could put everyone in danger.
Friends in High Places puts players in the role of Clyde Blackburn, who is an American pilot who steals the plane and the identity of a British pilot. This story is set in the spring of 1917 and eventually it has players flying a plane in order to escort larger bombers into enemy territory so they drop their payload.
Avanti Savoia has players taking on the role of an Italian soldier and talking about battles that took place in the fall of 1918. This story is told through the perspective of Luca Vincenzo Cocchiola as he is sitting around telling his children about what happened in that war.
While all of these stories end up painting a broader picture of World War I, they do not ever intertwine with one another. Instead, they are their own standalone stories that are meant to show people just how World War 1 affected such a massive portion of the world.
Gameplay
As are the other games in this long-running series, Battlefield 1 is a first-person shooter that allows users to use a variety of weapons. For this game, those weapons are all centered on what was available during World War I. There are various vehicles that can be used as well including tanks and planes.
The game’s developers have said that the title’s environment are more open and changeable than they have been in past iterations. This is, at least in part demonstrated by the fact that everything is destructible. This means that if you are rolling through a war-torn village in a tank and cannot find a path through town, you can make one by rolling over buildings and other debris.
The game’s multiplayer mode is designed to be able to support up to 64 people at once. It also has something known as a squad system. This allows players to join and leave a server together. The modes that are included in the multiplayer function are Conquest, Domination, Operations, Rush, Team Deathmatch, and War Pigeons.
Characters
Danny Edwards, several Harlem Hellfighters, Clyde Blackburn are some of the playable characters that are featured in Battlefield 1. In addition to the playable characters, there are a ton of named and unnamed NPCs that will play important parts as the story unfolds. There is even one part of the story where players will take on the role of a pigeon, in order to try and win a battle.
