Bungie Has Been Working on New Games for Three Years

The Destiny developer has several incubation teams working on new projects.

Bungie has had its hands full with the Destiny property for almost a decade now, which makes sense, seeing as they’ve been working on and pumping out new Destiny content at a pretty regular clip. But they’re working on more than just Destiny. The studio has been vocal about its intentions to work on new IPs in the past, and in a new interview with Metro, Bungie CEO Pete Parsons revealed that work on new games has been underway at the developer for three years.

Parsons explained that “incubation” teams led by some of Bungie’s top talent were established about three years ago, with a focus not on creating new games per se, but on fostering and building up more talented development teams within the studio.

“So we started about three years ago, Jason [Jones] and Jonny Ebbert and Zach Russell and a few of us started working on new incubations,” Parsons said. “The way to think about that is not just on new games. I think that is often the parlance people use. Actually a process around how we want to incubate the potential for new titles, but more importantly, new and amazing talent.”

Interestingly enough, Parsons says that even though building new games was never quite the focus of these new teams when they were established, Bungie has actually been pleased with the tangible progress they’ve made on new projects, which far exceeds the failure rate they had initially started out expecting.

“Ironically,” he said, “we expected a decently high failure rate from the incubations and what’s happened is, we are pretty excited about the work that’s being done not just on continuing the Destiny universe, but because we’ve been able to build such a deep bench of talent, these incubations are really amazing.”

A job listing earlier this year suggested that Bungie’s new IP will have a focus on competitive multiplayer, stylized visuals, and that it will be “comedic with lighthearted and whimsical characters.” Read more on that through here.

Meanwhile, as far as Destiny is concerned, it seems Bungie have no plans for Destiny 3 just yet.
