Diablo 4 Will Be Like First Chapter Of A Book, Says Developer

The team is already talking about expansions.

For a game that we’ve been told won’t be out for a pretty long time, we sure do keep hearing more and more stuff about Diablo 4. It’s no wonder, of course, considering how much of an anticipated title it no doubt is, but it’s interesting how in-depth we’re going on a game that probably won’t be out until 2021 or beyond. But either way, the development team already has their idea of how expansions will work to enhance the base game’s story.

In an interview with Ausgamer, Art Director John Mueller says there’s lots of new and familiar characters that could be introduced with Diablo 4. Expansions (which we already know is coming) could also expand on said characters, and they are looking at the upcoming title as basically chapter 1 in a long narrative.

Diablo IV is like the first chapter of a book,” Mueller said. “We want to tell a big story and we want to tell it, hopefully, for a very long time. Treating this like the first chapter of a book and Lilith as a key character in this story, it feels great knowing that there are still all these other characters that could come back in the future. Or, new characters that we haven’t seen before.”

We have to actually get to the game before we have to worry about any chapters, of course, but seems like Blizzard already has a pretty significant plan in place for the ongoing content. There’s rumors that we could get a beta of some kind next year, so hopefully we’ll get a sneak peek at chapter 1 relatively soon.
