Earthbound Series Is Over Says Its Creator

Posted By | On 06th, Apr. 2011

Shigesato Itoi, creator of the Earthbound series (or ‘Mother’ series in Japan), has announced that he is “not going to release a Mother 4… Mother is over now. But lately I’ve started to really appreciate having released three Mother games.” He continued “The feeling of, ‘I want a Mother 4 to be released!’ is inside me, too. Even if it’s not something I need to do, I still feel that way. If there were a fourth game, I’d want to be the player.”

Of the Mother Games only the 2nd installment, retitled Earthbound for American audiences, was ever released in the English language. Despite this, two characters from the series (Ness and Lucas) made appearances in the Gamecube and Wii Super Smash Bros. Titles. Although the 1st and 3rd installments of the series have only, up to this point, been available to non-Japanese speakers through dedicated fan translations, the ending of the Mother series is a sad event for fans of quirky JRPGs everywhere.
