We are in the seventh generation of gaming and it’s safe to assume that it’s on its last legs. The Xbox 360 is over 7 years old now and the PlayStation 3 will complete six years in the marker later this month. So the advent of next generation consoles, i.e. the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 is inevitable.
Xbox 360 took a full year headstart on the PlayStation 3 and apparently the same is going to happen in the eighth generation of gaming consoles. In a report by Stickskills, one of the two consoles, PlayStation 4/Orbis or Xbox 720/3 is going to launch soon, but not in the same year. According to an interesting comment by Activision’s CEO Bobby Kotick, we might have only one new console hitting next year.
“As we look to calendar 2013, we remain cautious in light of a challenging worldwide macroeconomic environment,” Kotick said.
“We can’t really talk too much about next generation console plans, but I think it’s safe to say you have a Wii U coming out and there will be another new console coming and we expect that they’ll be very successful,” he added.
Interesting how Kotick mentions only one console. Is it a hint that either the PS4 or Xbox 720 will be launching next year? Personally, I think neither Sony or Microsoft would want to lose one year on each other, especially when the Wii U has a headstart on both of them.
