Like with PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Fortnite‘s battle royale mode launched with just one map, too. And while Epic has worked persistently on the map ever since, adding it and transforming it, and just keeping it fresh all around, there have been some who have wondered whether or not they will ever launch a new map for the mode any time soon- even PUBG eventually did, after all (although PUBG‘s wasn’t all that well received by the community).
Speaking to IGN, Fortnite Design Lead Eric Williamson noted that right now, Epic is focused on keeping the existing map fresh, and putting out a new one is not a priority. “We’ve talked a bit about this internally. We just had the big map update and we learned a lot through that process,” he said.
“There’s no urgency for us to create a new map right now. It’s not a priority right now, whereas continuing to evolve and make the map feel fresh is something we’re very excited and interested about. So stay tuned; we have some interesting ideas.”
To be fair to Epic, they are leveraging those ideas in game pretty well, such as a meteor shower that has been growing in intensity over the last few days, leading players to speculate that the map might be altered by it as time goes on. But still, I do hope that Epic also eventually looks at adding more maps into rotation, too.
