If you were holding out for a physical release for Fatal Frame: Maiden of the Black Water in North America, well, don’t. There’s no point. Nintendo today announced the lineup of first and third party games that would be coming to the 3DS and Wii U for the rest of the year, and in this was tucked away the news that the eagerly anticipated fifth installment of the Fatal Frame franchise would be launching in North America exclusively via the Nintendo eShop.

The game will be launching on October 22, ahead of the symbolically significant Halloween date, and will be utilizing a highly interesting ‘free to start’ model- players will be able to download and play the game’s prologue and first two chapters for free, and if they like what they play, they can go ahead and download further chapters as they like as DLC from within the game.
