It’s not even slightly surprising that FIFA 21 will be releasing later this year, and yesterday at EA Play 2020, EA formally unveiled the sports sim title. Though it’ll be out for PC and current gen consoles in October, it will also be coming to Xbox Series X and PS5 when they release later in the year. And over on the game’s official website’s FAQ page, EA have confirmed that FIFA 21 will support free nex-gen upgrades.

Like Madden NFL 21those who get FIFA 21 on PS4 and Xbox One will be able to upgrade the game to its PS5 and Xbox Series X versions for free. Also like Madden, this will last for a year- you will be able to avail this free upgrade until FIFA 22 launches.

Additionally, EA have also confirmed that FIFA 21 will support inter-generational cross-progression- but only with a couple of modes. Any progress you make in Ultimate Team and Volta on PS4 or Xbox One will be able to carry over to PS5 or Xbox Series X respectively, or vice versa. That said, any other modes – Career Mode, Online Seasons, Co-Op Seasons, Pro Clubs, and other – will not support this feature.

Finally, EA have also said that FIFA 21 will not support cross-play, even though getting that feature enabled in FIFA is a long-term plan of theirs. “Allowing our players to play against each other on whichever platform they play EA SPORTS FIFA is a long-term goal of ours,” they wrote. “At this moment we don’t have any news, but we’re continuing to investigate its integration and will share any updates when we have them.”

FIFA 21 will release on October 9 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and on PS5 and Xbox Series X when those two become available.
