Development

The development of Ghost Recon Wildlands began back in 2012, and was officially unveiled during Ubisoft’s E3 2015 press conference. During the presentation, Ubisoft claimed Wildlands will feature the largest open-world environment the company has ever created. That claim includes games such as Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate which had one of biggest maps created by the company.

In order to create a realistic Bolivian environment, the developer had to visit Bolivia for two weeks and had to ask for consultation from local Bolivians. “With Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands, we’re moving the Ghost Recon franchise in a new direction, with a massive, beautiful and living open world that reacts to players’ choices,” Nouredine Abboud, Senior Producer, for Ubisoft said at the official reveal of the game. “Whether going it alone or teaming up with friends in co-op, players in Ghost Recon Wildlands will never encounter the same situation twice, providing amazing possibilities and creative freedom to cultivate very personal stories and experiences with the game.”

Alongside the presentation as well as the reveal trailer, the game featured an E3 demo that could be played by four players in co-op play. Ubisoft has said the game is getting a brand new proprietary engine, though there weren’t any more details than that made available during the event.

During the official reveal of the game, the company announced that Ubisoft Paris is taking the lead on development for this game but they are working in collaboration with five other Ubisoft Studios, Ubisoft Annecy, Bucharest, Montpellier, Milan and Reflections studios. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands is set to be released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One though there isn’t yet an official release date. There has been talk about attempting to get the game to market by the Holiday season of 2016.

Story

Ghost Recon Wildlands

Set a few years from now, Ghost Recon Wildlands lets players lead a team of Ghosts, a four-player U.S. Elite Special Operations unit, on a covert mission to eliminate the Santa Blanca drug cartel, an underworld power that has its roots deep in the drug trade and that drug trade is turning the cartel into a growing global threat.

The Santa Blanca drug Cartel, is arguably the most vicious and well-funded criminal force the world has ever seen, and it has turned Bolivia into a narco-state. The innocent civilians who have been caught in the crossfire are suffering from fear, injustice and violence. The player will take on the role as a member of the elite military team, the Ghosts. This team has been sent into Bolivia in order to both fight the drug cartel and create all manner of chaos in the country in order to drive a wedge between the corrupt government of Bolivia and the cartel.

There are hundreds of villages and well-known landmarks, incorporated into the game as well as local legends and a number of factions spread out among several different regions in Bolivia. The demo has the players go on a mission to extract a rogue cartel member, in order to gather Intel on the criminal organization’s hierarchy. The demo focuses on the massiveness of the world in Wildlands and on the freedom of choice.

Gameplay

Ghost Recon Wildlands

Players are able to play the entire game on their own or in multiplayer with three friends in co-op that will then let the team wander around the Bolivian countryside and jungle. Players will have complete flexibility in how they tackle the game’s story, missions and objectives, as well as their approach, whether it’s stealth, distraction, tactical or frontal assault, or a combination of styles. The game also has a decision making mechanic built into the title, and those choices have direct and sometimes unexpected consequences for enemies and allies creating dynamic and emergent gameplay throughout. This means the game can actually feel quite a bit different depending on the decisions you make.

There will be quite a bit of walking around the game world, as well as sneaking through jungle terrain but the developers have also said there is going to be a wide variety of vehicles available, both on and off road, in the air, on land, and at sea. The game also has a regular day-night cycle and there will also be a dynamic weather system that will come into play in the missions. Sometimes the weather is said to act as a way for players to cloak themselves against the enemies. Other times the weather will prove an obstacle in completing the mission.

In addition to some vehicles, players will also be able to pilot a drone that will allow them to get around some of the roughest Bolivian terrain. The drones will also be able to be used to tag enemy outposts and find them later more quickly.

Characters

Ghost Recon Wildlands

While the characters in the game haven’t been officially named, we do know they will be members of the Ghosts. This specialized military group has made appearances in the franchise. There are also some obvious villains that will be encountered as part of the drug cartel. So far none of the heroes or the villains have been officially named.

Note: This wiki will be updated once we have more information about the game
