Developer 22cans has withdrawn two of its games—Godus and Godus Wars—from Steam. Godus, originally released as an Early Access title on Steam 10 years ago, has never seen a 1.0 release, and has seen its fair share of controversies since release.
The game, the development for which was funded through crowdfunding, has seen quite a bit of criticism, forcing studio figurehead Peter Molyneux into a background role rather than being the face of the company.
Despite being no longer available to buy on Steam, Godus still has a store page, with over 7,000 reviews, bringing the game’s aggregated user reviews to Mostly Negative at the time of writing.
According to the studio, the decision to take the game down from Steam was due to a technical change coming to Amazon Web Services. The announcement points out that players that already own Godus can still continue playing the game.
“22cans would like to share important news regarding our games, Godus and Godus Wars,” said the studio in its announcement. “Regrettably, due to an upcoming technical change to Amazon Web Services, affecting our ability to serve necessary game files to new users, these titles are to be withdrawn from the Steam store. Please be assured that existing players can continue to enjoy these games without interruption.”
