In Hytale, the Workbench serves as the basic workstation that enables the crafting of more advanced items and tools, upgrading you beyond the crude tools that you have been assembling thus far from the Pocket Crafting section of your Inventory. As with any survival crafting game, there is some degree of progression to get both it and further upgrades.

This guide for Hytale is all about quickly assembling the general purpose Workbench and upgrading it further.

Crude Tools

In order to efficiently collect the materials required for the Workbench, you will first need these two tools: Crude Hatchet And Crude Pickaxe, in order to gather them. Quickly collect some Plant Fiber and Sticks from grass and bushes, as well as Stone Rubble from either Mossy Stone Rubble or normal Stone Rubble off of the ground. You may also stumble upon Piles of Sticks in some biomes. You will need two of each material for every tool you intend to craft.

Craft The Workbench

Use your new Crude Hatchet to harvest Tree Logs by chopping away at any Tree in your biome, and your Crude Pickaxe to mine Stone from full-sized Stone blocks as opposed to Stone Rubble. You will need four Tree Logs and three Stones in order to craft the Workbench directly from your Pocket Crafting window in the Inventory.

Be mindful while placing your Workbench, especially if you intend to upgrade this specific one, as taking it down resets its upgrade level. The upgrade materials will be refunded in full.

Also of note is that by placing your Chests within a six block distance of your Workbench, it will allow the latter to pull stored materials directly from them for your crafting recipes, thus sparing you the need of ferrying resources back and forth manually in your Inventory. You can get a visual indicator that it is doing so by looking for a tiny chest icon next to a given material in the crafting recipe.

Upgrade The Workbench

Eventually you will have crafted every item and workstation that the Workbench has to offer at Tier 1, and will need to upgrade it to Tier 2 in order to continue progression. Upgrading the Workbench requires the following materials:

  • Copper Ingot x30
  • Iron Ingot x20
  • Linen Scraps x20

Copper Ingots will require a Furnace in order to smelt Copper Ore in a 1:1 exchange, as does Iron Ingot from Iron Ore. Both of these ought to be plentiful in the starting area. Linen Scraps are loot drops from the various undead skeletal mobs, so you will have to engage in a lot of combat to accrue the 20 pieces required by both it and other crafting recipes.

That is all there is to know about crafting and upgrading the general Workbench in Hytale.
