The game will feature characters that are both heroes and villains from the DC Comics and Justice League universe. The game is slated for release on May 16th 2017 and it will be coming to the PS4, Xbox One, and mobile platforms. Like Injustice, the mobile versions, for both the iOS and Android will have many of the same characters, but the story elements and gameplay features will likely be slightly different.

Development

While there had been rumblings that a sequel to the popular Injustice was being worked on by NetherRealm, there were not many hints about the title until the development team officially announced the sequel on June 8, 2016. During the announcement of this game, creative director Ed Boon said he and his team wanted to bring what was good and familiar from the first game to this project, but also wanted to revamp the game in ways he saw other successful games go that had been released since the original.

Boon said he also wanted to bring over some pieces from recent multiplayer shooter games that had been so successful and this meant that Injustice 2 has a brand new Gear system introduced. The development team said that while this is the first time they have implemented something like Gear, the idea of using a kind of a role-playing game-like progression system had been discussed around the studio since before the collapse of Midway Games, which was the original publisher of the Mortal Kombat fighting game series.

In July of 2016, Boon announced there is going to be a comic book series which will be specifically dedicated to this game. This comic book series will lay the groundwork for the beginning of this game, as well as spell out the events that took place between Injustice and Injustice 2.

The development team also announced that at the same time the new game was being announced, players of the mobile version of the original Injustice would get a special gift. Those who were playing the original game on their iOS or Android devices could unlock Injustice 2 versions of Superman and Aquaman through the in-game Challenge Modes.

Story

Injustice 2 picks up the cinematic story that was first introduced in Injustice. In this next installment of what has become a series, Batman and his allies work towards putting the pieces of society back together while struggling against those who want to restore Superman’s regime. The development team has not spilled a ton of details about the story beyond that, though it has been said that a new threat appears and it may take both sides of the conflict teaming together against that threat in order to save the Earth.

Gameplay

Some of the gameplay for Injustice 2 is very similar to what we saw in the original game. This means that heroes players choose to fight with will have various abilities that go along with those characters. Some will have the capacity to fly, or shoot laser beams, or even shoot guns. Punches will carry more weight from someone like Superman than they will Batman. The environments are also destructible, just as they were in the first game. The super meter, which is a kind of special move meter is also returning for this game. That means that players can eventually charge up a special power kick, punch or another kind of move that can be devastating to their opponent when it’s unleashed.

One change to the special move meter is that the development team has said it can be used in a couple of different ways. Not only will this meter mean that the players can have a supercharged offensive maneuver but users will also be able to expend points from their meter in order to dodge out of the way of an opponent’s power move.

The biggest change in the gameplay mechanics of Injustice 2 is the Gear system. This is a kind of loot drop system which the developers say they have patterned after multiplayer shooters they have seen surface over the last few years. The Gear System will offer players character-specific costume pieces and equipment and these pieces of equipment will affect the power and status of a character when they collect the loot. The look of each character can be more customized than even the first version of Injustice, but the powers and attacks can be customized as well.

In total, the Gear system will have more than 1,000 different adjustable items that can be used in the single player mode. The developers went to great lengths to make sure the multiplayer mode could turn the Gear system off, in order to make fights between players be as fair as possible when it came time for tournaments. The matchmaking features of the multiplayer mode will allow those who want to use their Gear in the fights, find matches against other players who are willing to have the Gear turned on.

Characters

Many of the characters from Injustice are expected to return for Injustice 2. In the end, there were more than 30 playable characters that made their appearance in the original title. While the roster for the second game is expected to be as big or bigger, only a handful of characters have so far been confirmed to be in the new game. Aquaman, Batman, Harley Quinn, Superman and Wonder Woman have all been confirmed as returning. New characters that will make their debut in this installation of the game include, Blue Beetle, Atrocitus, Deadshot, Gorilla Grodd and Supergirl.

Note: This wiki will be updated once we have more information about the game.
