Update: Bloober Team has confirmed that the game will also be launching on PS4 and PC on the same day.

Original Story:

Layers of Fear, the psychological horror game that tries something unconventional for video games for a change – instead of having zombies or monsters be the horrors that you must contend with, the game challenges you to confront the disturbances of your own psyche and mind – will be launching on the PlayStation 4 next month. On February 16, in fact.

Layers of Fear charts a painter’s descent into insanity, as he becomes obsessed with finishing his magnum opus. It is a game that will play with the player’s sense of perception to unsettle them and create true feelings of dread within them.

“Imagine you walk into an empty square room,” the developer said on the PlayStation Blog, attempting to explain how the game may work. “There is a door on each of the walls. You dart to the first door to find it sealed shut. You go to the next door and then to the next, only to discover it’s the same story for each one of them. But upon turning around you find all the doors are gone. There are just plain walls. You make another circle around the room. Did you see that right? Were there doors there or was that somewhere else? Then the room shrinks behind your back. Feeling claustrophobic? And then a new door appears; this time it’s open. What is on the other side is not what you expect.”

This is the kind of video game I have often lamented does not exist- the kind that I would spring upon as soon as I learned of it. I’ll probably be checking this out upon its release next month. You should, too.

Meanwhile, you can check out screenshots and a trailer for the game below.
