Funcom have obtained the license to make LEGO figures into a fully-fledged massively-multiplayer online game.

The iconic figures have already spawned their own video game subculture, as well as the best selling toy in the UK in 2011.

Funcom already have a substantial pedigree with MMOs, having developed Anarchy Online and Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, as well as the hotly anticipated The Secret World out next month.

Whilst details are sketchy, given their history Funcom are expected to making not only the first true LEGO MMO, but also the first LEGO RPG.

“The market for family-friendly online experiences intended for children and youngsters is brimming with potential.

“Being able to work with a world-renowned brand such as the LEGO brand to develop an MMO for this audience is incredibly exciting to us as game developers and for Funcom as a company.

“This is source material we all know and love and we simply cannot wait to get started working with the LEGO Group on realising this exciting project,” said Trond Arne Aas, Funcom CEO.
