Mario Kart 8 is a pretty goddamn amazing game. At GamingBolt, we absolutely loved it, and we also found it to be the absolute best game that the Wii U has to offer (at least at the time of its release). It’s also a game that, owing to its sheer quality and to its brandname, saw incredible sales in the period following its launch, in spite of being on the Wii U.
Well, as part of their earnings report, Nintendo revealed the updated sales number for Mario Kart 8, and they are still shockingly impressive- in four months, the game has sold 3.49 million units worldwide; given that the total number of Wii Us sold worldwide is just a little over 7 million, that means that literally one in every two Wii U owners owns Mario Kart 8. If you own a Wii U, there’s a 50/50 chance you own Mario Kart 8 too.
Mario Kart 8 is also one of the highest selling games of this year, and has sold more than any PlayStation 4 or Xbox One exclusive. Again, to keep perspective, it is important to remember it achieved all of this on the Wii U.
It’s absolutely amazing and impressive. This kind of success is well deserved, and I for one am glad that Mario Kart 8 managed this in spite of a very real upper limit that being on the Wii U places for it.
