The newly released Minecraft Legends tasks you with defending the Overworld from an invasion of the enemy. All of the Overworld mobs, both familiar and new, will ally with the player to stem this tide. Among them are the Firsts, potent Golem-alikes, that are one of, if not the strongest allied units in the game.

First Steps

Recruiting them into your legion requires finding and awakening them first, in a multi-stage process. Although they can be discovered right off the bat in a playthrough, they cannot actually be awakened until after you annihilate your first Nether portal and subsequently learn a song of awakening from your guides.

The Firsts’ Abilities

Begin by finding the disassembled remains of a First of your choosing. Each of the four Firsts has a specific ability, so let that be your guide:

  • First of Stone: essentially a walking catapult that will lob great big boulders at the enemy as well as some melee ability
  • First of Diorite: a mobile spawner of golems to augment your troop numbers
  • First of Brick: barrier caster that can protect any allied unit and also stomp enemies
  • First of Oak: an even longer ranged unit sporting a large cannon

Finding the Firsts

Since the map is procedurally generated and there isn’t one singular guaranteed location for a First, your only clue to finding them are their corresponding biomes:

  • First of Stone: Meadow
  • First of Diorite: Jagged Peak
  • First of Brick: Dry Savannah
  • First of Oak: Badlands

Using a mount to quickly traverse a given biome, watch for a question mark to pop up on the map, alerting you to the presence of a First in proximity. The map legend for the question mark will confirm which First you’ve stumbled upon. Keep in mind that those question marks also appear for other discoverables such as mounts, so if you fail to find a First location, simply try again elsewhere.

Constructing The Tower Of Waking

Finding a body will unlock the Improvement: Wake The Firsts, and you will need to travel all the way back to the Well Of Fate in order to construct a Tower Of Waking. It can only be constructed at the Well Of Fate, and costs 100 Stone and 100 Prismarine. Fortunately, it only needs to be built once for all four Firsts.

Awakening The Firsts

Next, journey all the way back to the corpse itself and pay the particular tribute required to resurrect each First:

  • First of Stone: 100 Gold and 500 Stone
  • First of Diorite: 100 Gold and 125 Coal
  • First of Brick: 100 Gold and 125 Iron
  • First of Oak: 100 Gold and 500 Wood

In addition to their specific abilities, none of the Firsts consume an army slot, and are very effective damage soaks. This makes them serve as an excellent distraction from your more vulnerable spawned mobs, allowing them free reign to destroy enemy bases. When Firsts are inevitably killed, they will respawn for free at a beacon and await your command.

The Firsts are invaluable, possibly overpowered, allies in your defense of the Overworld, so be sure to reassemble them early on!
