NetherRealm Studios announced in July last year that it had officially ended support for Mortal Kombat 11 and had now fully turned its attention to its next project. There have, of course, been plenty of questions about what that next project is, but as recently as last month, creative director Ed Boon said that the studio wasn’t yet ready to talk about that.
It seems, however, that the wheels might be turning. Recently, Jonathan Andersen – who is a senior production manager at NetherRealm Studios – tweeted out an image of his desk. The bulk of it was dominated by prints or artwork, but it didn’t take long for many to spot a file called “MK12_Mast” mentioned on the computer screen in the image’s to right (which you can view below).
The image was quickly taken down, though many have speculated that this was either a deliberate tease (or a troll attempt) rather than something that’s been accidentally leaked. Primarily, that’s because the screen also shows a portion of an email that talks about Mortal Kombat fans who “eagerly scrape the internet for any trace” and asks to “take extra care with this material.”
Whether or not this is a leak, a tease, or something else entirely remains to be seen, but there have indeed been reports in recent months that have claimed that the next game that NetherRealm Studios is working on is Mortal Kombat 12– read more on that through here.
