Mortal Kombat 1’s Homelander and Omni-Man Won’t Just be Clones of Each Other, Ed Boon Promises

"We're not going to have them both do all the kind of category of Superman-type things. We're going to divvy up those abilities," Boon says.

Mortal Kombat 1’s base roster is continuing to fill up, with Sindel and General Shao being the most recent additions, and joining a long list of other fan-favourite characters who’ll be appearing in completely different fashion from their previous renditions. But of course, as has become traditional for the franchise, Mortal Kombat 1 is also going to add plenty of DLC characters, two of whom have been confirmed as The Boys’ Homelander and Invincible’s Omni-Man (who will be voiced by J.K. Simmons himself).

Bot those characters are, however, very similar in their powers and abilities, with both having been inspired in their own ways by Superman- so will Mortal Kombat 1 end up with two characters that are going to be very similar to each other in terms of how they play?

According to series creator and NetherRealm Studios boss Ed Boon, that won’t be the case. Speaking in a recent interview with IGN, Boon said that the developer is going to “divvy up” the abilities of Homelander and Omni-Man to ensure that there isn’t much overlap between the two of them.

“Obviously we could do anything with the characters, but I don’t think we’re going to have both Homelander and Omni-Man have heat vision or something like that,” he said. “We’re not going to have them both do all the kind of category of Superman-type things. We’re going to divvy up those abilities, so it’s not like it’s just a clone of the same character. They’re definitely going to play differently. The main attacks are going to really differentiate them, but we’re definitely aware of the assumption that some people were making on, ‘Oh, they’re just going to be the same characters.'”

Joining Homelander and Omni-Man in Kombat Pack 1 for Mortal Kombat will be DC’s Peacemaker, while Mortal Kombat characters Quan-Chi, Ermac, and Takeda will also be included, alongside five new Kameo fighters. Currently, a release date for the DLC pack is unknown.

Recently, NetherRealm also unveiled Invasions, a new single player board game-style mode that will make use of RPG mechanics. Read more on that through here.

Mortal Kombat 1 launches on September 19 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Make sure to also check out the opening minutes of its story mode.
