Nintendo Dominated Japanese Charts In 2014 With Over 3 Million 3DS Units Sold

1.2 million of these were New 3DS.

New Nintendo 3DS

The Japanese industry may be experiencing a bit of a downturn, but Nintendo’s iron grip over it continues regardless. In 2014, Nintendo dominated the industry completely, with 3 million Nintendo 3DS units sold. Nothing else even came close- the second highest selling piece of hardware in the region was PS Vita, with less than half the numbers.

What is even more impressive is that almost half of these sales came from the New Nintendo 3DS systems, introduced back in the last few months of the year, with 1.2 million of those sold.

Of course, as impressive as these numbers are, it is important to remember that even they could not stop a decline year over year for the system, as sales were down from the impressive 4 million that the 3DS posted in the country last year, in spite of hits like Youkai Watch 2, Super Smash Brps., and Pokemon OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire having released this year.

Now let’s see if Nintendo’s New 3DS systems, widely anticipated to be released worldwide within the next few months, can stimulate 3DS sales elsewhere too.
