Nintendo, along with Microsoft, Facebook, Steam, Sony, and everyone else including your grandma, seems to be jumping onboard the VR bandwagon these days. Nintendo’s got a pretty poor score in that respect with the epic flop that was the Virtual Boy so, naturally, we’d expect them to keep a lower profile with their forays into VR: unsurprisingly, we’ve yet to hear about any Nintendo VR products.
Yet still, Nintendo’s president, Tatsumi Kimishima, did go on record (Thanks VRFocus) recently at Nintendo’s 76th annual shareholder meeting to state that the company has been “researching it…we don’t have anything concrete to discuss now.”
This could mean many things: It could just be Kimishima’s way of putting off the VR question–with the Wii U falling flat, Nintendo’s been having to do some hard introspection about high-risk “gimmicky” plays, so a VR focus might not be on the table right now. At the same time, it could mean some kind of VR value addition for the NX when it comes out, similar to how PSVR complements the PS4 and PS4 Neo.
