Development

Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty!  (known prior to this as Abe HD and Abe’s Oddysee HD) is a remake of the popular Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee that was released in 1997 on PlayStation, Game Boy, DOS, OnLive, PlayStation Network and Windows across a period of years following the initial launch. The original Oddworld game was well received across the board. With this seemingly universal acclaim, the community that adored the game demanded more, receiving numerous sequels but nothing that quite matched the first entry.

In June of 2010, Just Add Water made an announcement that they would be working on a new Oddworld game. The announcement came alongside this statement, ” While we cannot go into specifics right now, we can tell you that over the coming weeks and months we will be announcing these exciting projects starring all of your favourite Oddworld characters.”

Series creator Lorne Lanning described the upcoming remake as being basically Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee being redone in a 3D physics engine as a 2D side-scrolling platformer stating the developers are not trying to reinvent any wheels. While this would typically be viewed as a cash grab, the fan base were overjoyed with this news.  On April 25th of 2014 via their official blog, Oddworld Inhabitants received yet more praise from the gaming community when they announced the pricing scale for the game. Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty will be available via Cross Buy on PlayStation platforms, meaning that if you purchase it on any PlayStation platform you will get it for free on its counter parts ( Buy it on PS4 and get it for free on PS3 and PSVita). This is being coupled with Cross Save to further promote the Cross Buy.

Gameplay

Given the nature of Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty (meaning it’s a remake) the gameplay will remain largely if not completely unchanged. The player will be taking control of the Mudokon named Abe that they must help survive in a  2.5D scrolling platforming world. Abe must set about freeing his fellow Mudokons from their slave masters: the Glukkons.

While Abe has no manner of direct physical attack, he can often outmanoeuvre his foes, the Sligs, but his agility can often be undone in an instant given that the Sligs carry a variety of ranged weaponry. Abe’s primary means of retaliation is possession, that allow him to control certain enemies (the Sligs  being one of them). Other enemies cannot be possessed and must be dealt with traps.

Story

The story of Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty takes place in the world of Oddworld. Somewhere on this planet is the food industry giant Rupture Farms, a large corporate meat processing powerhouse that is responsible for Oddworlds most loved treats and foodstuffs. But deep down in the bowels of the plant is a work line operated by the enslaved Mudokon people.  When buffing the wax shine on the floors around the board room where Abe discovers this information, he witnesses a group of Glukkons discussing the situation.

Their leader Mullock resolves to pre-emptively protect their financial assets by using the Mudokon people as the main ingredient in their new product Mudokon Pops. Shocked and worried by this discovery, Abe sets out to save his people and freeing them from their forced slavery.
