Nintendo making a new IP? Hell hath frozen over.

That Nintendo does not make new IPs is a commonly heard refrain in the video games industry. It is also wrong: just in the last two years, they have given us Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story, Pandora’s Tower, and The Wonderful 101, and this is just big IPs on the consoles, not counting any of the smaller, digital stuff that they push. This is all in addition to the upcoming X and Miyamoto’s new IP, both of which are due for Wii U some time next year.

Well, add another new IP to that list. Legendary game designer Masamichi Abe, best known for his work on games like Tekken 2, Pikmin, Pikmin 2, Metroid Prime Hunters and Mario vs Donkey Kong: Minis March Again, is now working with Nintendo Kyoto on a new, original game, former colleague at Namco Katsuhiro Harada confirmed on Twitter.

It will be interesting to see what kind of a new IP Nintendo would be pushing here. Would it be in a genre where they don’t already have first party representation?
