The upcoming Prey looks great, and it is interesting to see Arkane’s vision for the title- the unfortunate case of the original Prey and its cancelled sequel notwithstanding. The upcoming game will entirely push players, by being a difficult title that requires experimentation on the players’ part.
“I guess it’s definitely a difficult game,” Lead Designer Ricardo Bare said in an interview with Game Informer. “Especially as the game goes on, I expect players will have to change their strategies and experiment a lot when they encounter some of the Typhon creatures. If there’s a spectrum, you could probably describe a game like Dark Souls as pretty hardcore and some of us are big fans of that game. There’s a little bit of splash of that in there, there’s some survival elements and some really hard challenges to overcome.”
He also shed some light on those survival elements, emphasizing how those will make the game far harder for the player than it otherwise will be to begin with.
“We have the trauma system- if you fall from great height, your bones can break. If you run into an engineering operator, which is kind of a robot in our game, it’s malfunctioning and it might give you third-degree burns. When that happens there are some penalties and you need to go find a medical operator to remove them.”
All of which sounds exciting, and incredibly stressful- it sounds like this is a game that will constantly require players to be cognizant of their surroundings, and of themselves. Prey is going to launch in 2017 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
