One of the most surprising recent reveals has to be the announcement of a new Monkey Island game with Return to Monkey Island, bringing the beloved franchise back from its long slumber. The upcoming sequel sees the return of almost the entirety of the original development team.
With the confirmation that the new game will be set right after the events of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, many have been confused about what this mean’s for the game’s continuity and the series’ lore, and how it will fit with the three games that are already set after Monkey Island 2. So, what happens to those events and characters characters?
To answer that, game director Ron Gilbert recently said on Twitter that the game will respect and is “very careful” with the series’ canon, while also adding that fan-favorite Murray from The Curse of Monkey Island will be back as well.
Return to Monkey Island is slated to launch sometime later in 2022, with target platforms yet to be revealed.
MI3 doesn't go out of canon. We were very careful about that. Murray is in this game.
