The PlayStation 2 classic Silent Hill 2 has a remake out now, over 23 years later, and brings improvements to gameplay, new collectibles, and new endings. Although there are 8 distinct endings, of which 2 are brand new, it is possible to get them without multiple full playthroughs, by using strategic manual saves.

This Silent Hill 2 Remake guide describes how to get all 8 endings, and where to save manually to limit the number of playthroughs necessary.

New Bad Ending “Stillness”

The easier of the two new endings is also exclusive to New Game Plus. It requires nothing more than possession of the Key of Sorrow, with the caveat that it appears to spawn only if the original bad ending “In Water” has been achieved prior.

Having acquired the Chainsaw at the start of the playthrough, it immediately comes in handy here, as you will need it to bust through the right backseat window of a green car on Wiltse Road. This car is located beyond a chain link metal gate down a short tunnel off of Nathan Avenue.

Find a freestanding safe on the floor in the Manager’s Office, on 1F of the LakeView Hotel in the Employee Section, and insert the Key of Sorrow. Next, use the dial of the safe with this combination on Hard difficulty:

  • Starting from 0
  • Dial right or clockwise to 3
  • Dial back left or counter-clockwise to 1
  • Dial back right or clockwise to 4

The safe will open to reveal the Toluca Postcard.

Look at the postcard to get the new bad ending.

New Good Ending “Bliss”

A second new ending that is a lot more involved to unlock. At the very north-western corner of the map in the west side of South Vale, along Nathan Avenue, and well past the Silent Hill Historical Society, is a corpse lying on the ground. Pick up the Bloody Note next to it, to recover a combination code for a safe, which is 1887 on Hard difficulty.

This safe is fixed into the shoe rack behind the counter at Pete’s Bowl-O-Rama, also in the west side of South Vale. Lying inside is a Rusted Key, as well as a Cryptic Letter Memo.

Next, head to the Garden of Brookhaven Hospital. Lying in plain sight on a bench inside the gazebo is the Small Chest, which when combined with the Rusted Key, opens to reveal the Silent Hill series-familiar White Claudia bottle.

Consuming the bottle of White Claudia in Room 312 on 3F of the LakeView Hotel, before using the Video Tape in the VHS will unlock the new good ending.

Save manually here to get the other possible ending at this point, before consuming the bottle of White Claudia.

Original Good Ending “Leave”

The normal good ending in the original Silent Hill 2 returns intact. This ending is easily achieved over the course of ordinary play. The actual requisites are:

  • Avoiding injury, or at least,
  • Healing often to avoid staying injured
  • Avoiding combat as far as possible
  • Avoiding checking up on Maria while in Brookhaven Hospital and the Labyrinth
  • Inspecting both Mary’s Photo and Mary’s Letter in the inventory often
  • Not inspecting Angela’s Knife in the inventory more than the first time
  • Staying to listen in to the entire conversation prior to the encounter with the final boss

Much of this is broadly hinted at in the in-game book “Searching for Another Conclusion Vol. I: The Road to Tomorrow”.

Original Neutral Ending “Maria”

The neutral, arguably good ending from the original game can be achieved by:

  • Taking a beating
  • Actively defending Maria from attack and injury
  • Checking up on Maria often while in Brookhaven Hospital and the Labyrinth
  • Not inspecting either Mary’s Photo, Mary’s Letter, or Angela’s Knife in the inventory more than the first time
  • Not staying to listen in to the entire conversation prior to the encounter with the final boss

Much of this is broadly hinted at in the in-game book “Searching for Another Conclusion Vol. II: Getting the Girl”.

Original Bad Ending “In Water”

The third of the normal endings from the original game, this is the worst possible ending and can be achieved by doing the following:

  • Taking a beating
  • Avoiding healing
  • Keeping health in the red zone as far as possible
  • Inspecting Angela’s Knife in the inventory often
  • Not inspecting either Mary’s Photo or Mary’s Letter in the inventory more than the first time
  • Staying to listen in to the entire conversation prior to the encounter with the final boss

Much of this is broadly hinted at in the in-game book “Searching for Another Conclusion Vol. III: Choosing Death”.

A manual save of a good or neutral ending run at some point before the end of the game can be reverted to, so that you can hammer the inspect function on Angela’s Knife as well as keep James in the red zone for the remainder of the game, to then conclude the run with an “In Water” ending.

Original New Game Plus Ending “Rebirth”

The New Game Plus ending from the original Silent Hill 2 returns as well. This involved playthrough requires finding items exclusive to New Game Plus before finishing the game, ignoring any other prerequisites. The four collectibles are:

  • Crimson Ceremony

An item specific to the Rebirth ending. At the Graveyard in South Vale, close to the northern shoreline, find a tree with two gravestones nearby. Lying in plain sight at the foot of the headstone on the right is this book.

  • White Chrism

Another item specific to the Rebirth ending. At the entrance to the Baldwin Mansion in the west side of South Vale, find this vial lying in plain sight on a table with two candlesticks.

  • Obsidian Goblet

The third item specific to the Rebirth ending. Within the Silent Hill Historical Society in the west side of South Vale. This ornate cup is sitting in plain sight inside a wall niche in the same room as the painting.

  • Lost Memories

The fourth and final item specific to the Rebirth ending. In the Lost & Found room on 1F of the LakeView Hotel. This book is lying in plain sight on a table after squeezing through the opening.

Save manually right before picking up “Lost Memories” to optimize your playthrough, as possessing this final item in the inventory, in combination with the previous three above, leads to the Rebirth ending overriding all other endings at the conclusion of the run.

Original Joke Ending “Dog”

A joke ending that was exclusive to the original New Game Plus. While not requiring any particular prior endings to have been achieved, it still requires New Game Plus for the requisite items to spawn:

  • Broken Key Part #1

Get the first part of a key within The Pet Center, right next to Big Jay’s on Neely Street, in the east side of South Vale.

  • Broken Key Part #2

Get the second part of a key in the doghouse of a home on Katz Street, south-west of Baldwin Mansion. Facing north and counting from right to left, the first house should have a small gate with a bone sign/symbol to go through.

Once combined in the inventory, you will have possession of the Dog Key. Use it on the locked Observation Room door, adjacent to Room 312 on 3F of the LakeView Hotel.

This action is an instant conclusion to the game, skipping the final boss as well.

Original Joke Ending “UFO”

Another joke ending that was also exclusive to the original New Game Plus. While not requiring any particular prior endings to have been achieved, it still requires New Game Plus for the requisite item to spawn:

  • Blue Gem

Acquire the Blue Gem at the Jewellers, which is right next door to The Pet Center, in the east side of South Vale. Bust the display window on the left to pick up the Blue Gem from the open box.

Once acquired, this ending requires some further legwork, compelling you to interact with the Blue Gem in the inventory when you visit four locations around the map. The Blue Gem will visibly brighten the first time it is interacted with at each of these locations:

  • Graffiti of an eye on the roof of Saul Street Apartments
  • The pier where you meet Maria in Rosewater Park
  • After disembarking the boat on Toluca Lake
  • Before using the Video Tape in the VHS in Room 312 on 3F of the LakeView Hotel

Save manually here to get the other possible ending at this final point, before interacting with the Blue Gem.

This action is an instant conclusion to the game, skipping the final boss as well.

That is how to get all eight endings, including the two new ones, in Silent Hill Remake.
