Sonic Mania Is A Return To Sonic’s 2D Roots

Gotta go fast, into the past!

For Sonic‘s 25th anniversary, Sega will be giving fans not one, but two new Sonic games, in addition to the already announced Sonic Boom: Ice and Fire. The first of these is Sonic Mania, and it is going to be absolutely glorious, if the reveal trailer for the game is any indication.

The game foregoes the gimmickry of the recent Sonic games, and instead reverts to a simpler time when Sonic was doing what he did best- running across increasingly imaginative stages. Sonic Mania is a brand new game in the style of the classic Genesis Sonic games, but unlike Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which was widely maligned by fans, Mania brings longtime modders Christian Whitehead, Headcannon and PagodaWest Games on the Sonic scene, who in recent years have been getting 2D Sonic more right han Sega themselves, to ensure that it delivers an authentic experience.

If you don’t believe me, just check out the trailer below. It’s like a blast from a 16 bit past. I can’t wait for Sonic Mania‘s launch, which is currently slated for Spring next year, on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
