Splatoon 2 Becomes First Nintendo Switch Game to Hit 2 Million Copies Sold at Retail in Japan

Meanwhile, Nintendo's Breath of the Wild also hits a major milestone.

Nintendo’s perennially hit Splatoon 2, the sequel to their Wii U exclusive colorful multiplayer shooter, has set a major record in Japan- it has become the first Nintendo Switch game to hit 2 million copies sold at retail in Japan. This also makes it one of very few console games to have hit the milestone since 2009.

Splatoon 2‘s success makes sense, too- Nintendo has given it exemplary post launch support in the form of great updates and new content, all for absolutely free, ever since the game released last July, something that they look to be continuing at least for the next few months.

Nintendo has seen another major milestone in Japan, too- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has now become the highest selling Zelda game since Ocarina of Time 20 years ago, in 1998- and this is just for the Nintendo Switch version, and again, not counting any of the digital sales it has accrued. Given the steady legs the game has exhibited since its launch, hopefully, it manages to cross a million sold in the country some time soon.
