Super Mario Maker 2 is out now, offering a vast array of creation tools to the millions who’ll be playing it. Some will use those tools to create inventive, ingenious courses, but there are many who’ll just create levels that exist solely to troll players (don’t get me wrong, I like a good troll level every now and then).

To help you get up to speed on how to do the former, Nintendo has released a video in which Takashi Tezuka, longtime Super Mario custodian and producer on Super Mario Maker 2, shares his top 5 tips on how to do just that. Tezuka-san advises you to not worry too much about getting praise from players, to start with thinking of a name for your course, to check out other people’s courses for inspiration, to check out Story Mode to get new ideas, and to get opinions from others on the courses you’re making.

Here’s another tip, from yours truly. Use Clear Pipes. Lots and lots of Clear Pipes. They’re super rad.

Super Mario Maker 2 is out now on the Switch, and it’s got off to a flying start right out the gate in terms of sales. It’s definitely well-deserved, too- read our review through here.
