Despite its ever-expanding free trial, Final Fantasy 14 will continue as a subscription-based MMORPG.

Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida has revealed that there are no plans at Square Enix to convert the subscription-based MMORPG into a free-to-play game. Speaking to Eurogamer, Yoshida said that, while the game’s free trial will be expanded over time, the company doesn’t want to make the game free-to-play at the moment.

“I believe the free trial will continue to be expanded, but we have no plans of making the client itself free at the moment,” said Yoshida in response to a question about the game’s generous free trial eventually expanding to encompass current content. “Since a huge amount of time and money has been invested in the expansion packages, the revenue from sales of the expansion package itself is still very important in order to continue to make expansions on this scale. We would like to constantly aim for the best on the business side as well to continue making a lot of content to be enjoyed.”

Yoshida goes on to talk about the last ten years of working on Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn, which was released all the way back in 2013. Since its release, the game has seen four expansions, with the fifth one—Dawntrail—being slated for a Summer 2024 release.

When asked whether the studio plans to leave Final Fantasy 14 to start focusing on a new game, Yoshida responded by saying that there are no current plans to leave the world of Eorzea. This might change some day down the line if the is hit with some kind of inspiration.

“We don’t have plans to move on to a new game as that would be something even more difficult than having the realm be ‘reborn’,” said Yoshida. “That might change if I am hit with some kind of inspiration though.”

Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail was announced in July with a trailer during the most recent iteration of its annual Final Fantasy FanFest. The expansion seems to be themed after providing the protagonist—the Warrior of Light—with a vacation after the harrowing events of the last few expansions.

The game’s free trial has also been expanded quite a bit. When the free trial was first introduced in 2020, players could play Final Fantasy 14 up to the end of the Heavensward expansion. Back in July, Square Enix announced that the free trial is now being expanded to also include the Stormblood expansion, leading up to right before the events of the critically-acclaimed Shadowbringers expansion kicks off.

The Final Fantasy 14 free trial is getting expanded by quite a bit, adding a whole expansion's worth of new content for free players, including the Omega raids and the Return to Ivalice Alliance raids.

During its recent Final Fantasy 14 Fanfest, Square Enix has announced that the free trial for Final Fantasy 14 will be getting expanded to now also include the Stormblood expansion alongside its earlier contents covering up to the end of the Heavensward expansion.

The new expanded free trial for Final Fantasy 14 will go live with the release of patch 6.5. It is worth noting that only fresh accounts can make use of the free trial, and players who previously tried the game before the free trial went live back in 2020 and stopped playing will have to start over with a brand new account to be able to make use of the current iteration of the free trial.

Final Fantasy 14: Stormblood features a story revolving around the uprising of two nations under Garlean control—Ala Mhigo and Doma. The globe-trotting campaign has the player’s Warrior of Light kick off several rebellions in an effort to push back against the tyranny of the Garlean empire, with the endgame story focusing around bringing the war to an end and leading into the events of Shadowbringers.

The announcement for the new expanded free trial comes alongside other announcements, which most notably includes the name and a teaser trailer for the next expansion for Final Fantasy 14, dubbed Dawntrail. The new expansion is slated for release in Summer 2024, and will also come to the Xbox Series X/S, which is set to get Final Fantasy 14 in Spring 2024.

Fans look for CD Projekt RED's latest to be heavily revamped but it may not be so simple.

By now, you’ve probably heard it all about Cyberpunk 2077. It’s both the best and worst game of last year, depending on who you ask. What many seem to agree on (for the most part) is that it didn’t have everything that CD Projekt RED promised. Whether it’s the Life Paths, the Perk tree, the open world design or the AI, the sentiment among those disappointed is that these things have to be expanded, if not outright improved or fixed.

While looking at Cyberpunk 2077 and the aftermath of its immediate launch, one game constantly comes to mind – No Man’s Sky. You’ve probably heard everything about that as well – how the game released in a less than ideal state, full of bugs and glitches, while numerous key features were either missing (like sandworms or giant fleet battles) or ambiguous and then confirmed missing (like multiplayer). After much vilification, Hello Games earned back its goodwill – and then some – while No Man’s Sky is celebrated as one of the best current on-going games.

So with updates still to come for Cyberpunk 2077 – free DLC, paid expansions and multiplayer notwithstanding – one has to think that a No Man’s Sky-style comeback is possible. Of course, when it comes to game development, things are never that simple.

It’s first important to note just how different both games are. No Man’s Sky was sold as a sci-fi space exploration title but at its core, it was a sandbox game with survival elements. The gameplay wasn’t outright broken – even with all the bugs – but its procedural generation algorithm alone wasn’t enough to create compelling content or systems, nor could it mask all of the different flaws. To that end, adding more systems to work alongside it, creating meaningful content and reasons to explore while polishing and improving the core gameplay became key. Of course, due to how free-form the story is, it’s also not difficult to revamp and expand the narrative.

By comparison, Cyberpunk 2077’s structure and approach is different. Night City is a fixed place so implementing certain things has to be done within the context of its lore and setting. Its various systems are already in place but require significant revamping. Take the overall way that the police work – it isn’t just enough to “improve” their AI and ensure they don’t spawn near the player after a crime is committed. The development team also has to change its systems to implement features like proper car chases – and no, not the kinds that just last for one block – or actual tactics. This is in addition to realistic behavior, like patrolling the city or reacting to any crimes taking place outside of scripted events.

This doesn’t take into account requested features like a proper “wanted” system or mega-corps bribing the cops. Changing the user interface to make it more intuitive may sound simple but takes work. Having V properly interact with vendors, browsing for items in shops a la Red Dead Redemption 2 and being able to rob them? That requires even more work and proper testing to ensure they work properly without breaking anything else.

Given how much the generic NPC interactions mirror The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, it’s a given that CD Projekt RED will have to make a lot of these new systems from scratch, which takes time. How much time would it then take to revamp Life Paths and actually have them affect one’s playthrough and decisions throughout the game? Or rebalance and revamp the Perk tree to actually present substantial and varied choices?

This also brings up another point – the engine. For all its faults in the beginning, No Man’s Sky had a pretty scalable engine. This made it possible for Hello Games to add all kinds of things, even if they weren’t initially promised. Mechs, base-building, vehicles, underwater exploration and space derelicts are just a few examples. Online co-op is another, one that took significantly more time to implement but was indeed possible with the engine. None of this takes away from the studio’s hard work, mind you, but given the scale and frequency of updates, and the number of development team members at Hello Games, the engine’s scalability has proven to be a boon.

This isn’t to say that Cyberpunk 2077’s engine, aka RED Engine 4, isn’t scalable in its own ways. One could look at the current state of the game and think it difficult to have proper reputation systems for gangs, or detailed NPC routines. But the same was thought for No Man’s Sky at launch. Time will ultimately be the best judge so we’ll give CD Projekt RED the benefit of the doubt for now.

However, it’s also important to point out another key aspect that ultimately drives a game’s rebuilding – the leadership. When Diablo 3 launched and was considered a disaster by its fan base, Josh Mosqueira would ultimately lead the team as its new director and usher in various wide-ranging changes that saved the game and elevated it to new heights. When Final Fantasy 14 flopped, Naoki Yoshida led the team to create A Realm Reborn and has since contributed to not only making it one of the best MMOs currently available but one of the greatest RPGs ever made. For all his faults with hyperbole and marketing speak before launch, Sean Murray ultimately led the resurgence of No Man’s Sky and saved his studio’s reputation as a result.

This isn’t to say that changing the game director for Cyberpunk 2077 will ultimately make it a better game. But in each of the previous cases, a major change or shift in leadership was necessary to ensure the game’s success. For all the credit that Yoshida received in reviving Final Fantasy 14, he still needed the approval of Square Enix’s CEO for the costly endeavor. Mosqueira and his team faced opposition at numerous points when trying to make Diablo 3 how they wanted but ultimately prevailed. A change in leadership isn’t enough if the philosophy behind development doesn’t change, starting from the top.

In terms of resources, CD Projekt RED is more than capable of improving Cyberpunk 2077 and there are likely enough people who would give it another chance despite the backlash. Whether it can ultimately revamp the game on the scale of No Man’s Sky, even if everything goes right, will take a good few years. Once again, the processes, technology and work needed would be completely different – “a few years” may even be somewhat conservative in that respect. That also doesn’t take into account the amount of resources that the company can spare, what with its paid expansions, multiplayer and future projects also in the works.

At the end of the day, it’s not enough to just make Cyberpunk 2077 the “game that it should have been.” It’s also about going further beyond, and getting back any goodwill that the company has lost. Whether diehard fans will be there to give it another chance or a new spree of players will join in, praising the game for all of its changes and improvements, this won’t be the last we hear of Cyberpunk 2077 in the years to come.

Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn has been hailed as the best MMORPG to play in this day and age, especially with its most recent expansion Shadowbringers. If you’re keen on jumping in, then take note – Final Fantasy 14 Online Starter Edition is currently free on the PlayStation Store. This applies to certain territories like the UK, France, Australia and so on but it should be live for North America by today.

The Starter Edition is usually priced for $19.99 and includes the base game along with a 30 day free trial. So you can waive off the subscription fee for the first month and see if the game is up your alley. You’ll need to purchase expansions like Heavensward, Stormblood and Shadowbringers separately though. The offer is available until May 26th.

It’s actually a pretty good time to get into Final Fantasy 14. The development team is planning to revamp the base game experience and trim down on some of the needless fluff to make it more enjoyable for new players. Stay tuned for more details on when this update will go live.

Square Enix’s latest major update for Final Fantasy 14 is now available. Patch 5.2 “Echoes of a Fallen Star” offers a hefty amount of content with new main scenario quests, the new Anamnesis Anyder dungeon and the second part of Eden’s Verse raid. A new Trial, Cinder Drift, is also available and see players battling Ruby Weapon from Final Fantasy 7.

But wait, there’s more, including new Beast Tribe quests and new fishing content which sees players sailing on a ship and fishing to their hearts’ content. New quests are available for “Resistance Weapon” equipment enhancement and several adjustments have been made to existing Jobs and New Game Plus mode. New Game Plus has also seen several new chapters added to it.

It’s a pretty hefty update overall and should keep players busy for a good long while. Final Fantasy 14 is currently available on PS4 and PC with an Xbox One release planned. It’s latest expansion is Shadowbringers which received tons of acclaim for its story-telling and content.

Square Enix’s massively successful MMO Final Fantasy 14 will receive “Echoes of a Fallen Star”, it’s latest patch, in mid-February. To showcase just what fans can expect, the development team has released a new trailer. And yes, that is Ruby Weapon from Final Fantasy 7.

Players can also expect new main scenario quests, Eden’s Verse raids, a new dungeon “Anamnesis Anyder” and a new Trail. Crafting and gathering are receiving overhauls while ocean fishing is being made possible. If that weren’t enough, New Game Plus will be receiving some updates as well. There’s a fair bit of content to go through, even by the standards of a Final Fantasy 14 update.

The future of Final Fantasy 14, even past this major update, is looking fairly bright. The MMO has passed 18 million players and will be coming to Xbox One later this year. Stay tuned for a proper release date for patch 5.2 – Echoes of a Fallen Star in the coming days.

Square Enix clarifies recent reports of a next-gen version being in development.

Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 14 has had an eventful year with the release of the critically acclaimed Shadowbringers expansion. It was also announced that the MMO would finally be coming to Xbox One. However, it was also recently revealed that the team was “hard at work” on a PlayStation 5 version.

This was based off of comments that producer/director Naoki Yoshida made at the recent Final Fantasy 14 London Fan Gathering. However, it seems that this was somewhat of a mistake. A PR representative told DualShockers that, “While not a confirmation, Yoshida-san expressed a hope that Final Fantasy 14 Online may one day appear on the next generation of Sony console.”

It’s a given that Final Fantasy 14 will eventually transition over, especially since A Realm Reborn arrived on PlayStation 3 first before coming to PS4. “When” remains to be seen but it’s going to happen, one way or another. As for what the team is working on now, players can look forward to future parts of the YoRHa: Dark Apocalypse story (which crosses over with NieR: Automata) and other updates. Stay tuned in the meantime for more information.

Xbox boss says they have a "great relationship" with producer/director Naoki Yoshida.

Square Enix announced at the recent X019 event that many of its mainline Final Fantasy titles and the Kingdom Hearts HD remasters would be coming to Xbox Game Pass. However, there was one major omission. Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn will be coming to Xbox One as well.

The news was confirmed by Xbox boss Phil Spencer to GameSpot. He stated that, “In addressing the press at X019, Spencer said, “I wanted you to know, rest assured that we will be bringing that game [Final Fantasy 14] to Xbox. We have a great relationship with Yoshida-san and we’re working through what it means to bring [to Xbox] a cross-platform MMO that they’ve run for years.”

Over the years, director and producer Naoki Yoshida has talked about the possibility of bringing Final Fantasy 14 to Xbox One. It seems that work has finally come to fruition, though when the MMO will launch remains to be seen. There’s also the question of whether it will support cross-platform play with PS4 and PC.

In terms of subscription-based MMORPGs, Final Fantasy 14 is considered by many to be the best with 16 million players as of May 2019. It’s received numerous critically acclaimed expansions over the years with Heavensward, Stormblood and most recently, Shadowbringers. A new update even added YoRHa Apocalypse, a raid based on NieR: Automata and handled by Yoko Taro.

This year’s Gamescom will be kicking off with a special event called Gamescom Opening Night Live, hosted on Geoff Keighley on August 19th. Keighley tweeted recently about some of the publishers that will be making announcements, including Square Enix. Today, the publisher confirmed which titles will be present at the show and playable for attendees.

Right off the bat, there will be playable demos for Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Marvel’s Avengers. Not much information was provided about the content of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake demo (though sneak peeks at merchandise prototypes will be offered). However, the demo for Marvel’s Avengers will let players try out each hero in the A-Day incident preceding the main story.

Other titles that will be playable include Trials of Mana, a remake of Seiken Densetsu 3 for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PC. Final Fantasy 14 will also be present with the largest fan gathering ever to take place in Germany set for August 23rd. Finally, Life is Strange 2: Episode 4 – Faith will debut, showcasing the next chapter of the Diaz brothers before it releases on August 22nd.
