Leaks have repeatedly claimed that a ground-up remake of the beloved 2000 RPG is in active development at Square Enix.
Neither of the two is due out this year, though Final Fantasy 9 Remake could release sometime in 2026, a prominent leaker has claimed.
The long-rumoured remake is also not going to be an HD-2D game, a prominent insider has claimed.
It was "originally outsourced to another developer," but Square Enix was "not satisfied, and development shifted", per leaker Midori.
A prominent leaker has said that though the rumoured Final Fantasy 9 Remake is indeed in the works, the alleged remake of its successor isn't real.
Reports have previously claimed that a remake of the beloved PS1 RPG is currently in development at Square Enix.
"I heard very recently, once again, Final Fantasy 9 Remake is real. That is real and happening," reported Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb.
