Now, Epic has spoken on the matter as well. In a statement to VGC, the company denied reports of all of Mediatonic being laid off, and said that the studio’s work on Fall Guys “continues to be a priority” for Epic Games despite layoffs.

“This is false,” an Epic spokesperson said about reports of all of Mediatonic being let go. “Mediatonic’s work on Fall Guys continues to be a company priority.”

Prior to the layoffs, Mediatonic employed around 300 people, though it remains to be seen exactly how hard the studio has been hit by recent developments at its parent company.

Mediatonic consisted of about 300 employees, and while Schreier is unsure how many were laid off, the number is “not close to that.” Though there’s no official confirmation for the same (yet), former game lead Ed Fear confirmed he lost his job on Twitter. He also shared an image of the Mediatonic logo in the office, with the letters rearranged to “Decimation.”

Layoffs have occurred throughout the industry in 2023, from giants like Microsoft laying off employees at 343 Industries, Bethesda, and The Colaition to the Embracer Group recently shuttering Volition. Time will tell if the layoffs at Mediatonic affect the future of Fall Guys, so stay tuned for more updates.

While Murder by Numbers is an underrated puzzle game, The Elder Scrolls Online is arguably more appealing. After its overhaul into Tamriel Unlimited, it’s become one of the better MMORPGs out there, fusing the character creation of The Elder Scrolls games with some great quests. It has an optional subscription and microtransactions, with free content updates and paid DLC released over time.

It recently received its seventh paid expansion, Necrom, to positive praise. The next free titles on the storefront are Homeworld Remastered Collection and Severed Steel from July 27th to August 3rd. Stay tuned for more details when they go live, and claim this week’s free titles before they’re gone.

While such a massive number of players is noteworthy, it’s not too surprising. Epic Games revealed on June 28th that Fall Guys enjoyed more than twice the number of players as its previous peak concurrent user record. It also resulted in a “record number” of active players on the storefront with the free-to-play version’s launch.

With Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout being exclusive to the Epic Games Store on PC (though Steam users will continue to receive updates), the sky’s the limit on its success. In terms of new content, Abstergo’s Challenge recently went live, allowing players to earn cosmetics based on Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Head here for more details on the same.

The developer has revealed the new Abstergo’s Challenge event, which adds new cosmetics and costumes, focused specifically on Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. That includes unlockables like the “Animus Trainee” nickname (for 100 points), the “Animus Trainee” nameplate (for 500 points), the “Animus Synchronising” pattern (700 points), and the “Apple of Eden” backpack (1000 points).

In addition to that, two new costumes – Eivor the Wolf-Kissed Costume and Odin the All-Father Costume – are available for 1,200 Show-Bucks each. If you get them together in a bundle, it’ll cost 2,000 Show-Bucks, and you’ll also get additional goodies, like a nameplate.

Finally, the event also brings back the fan-favourite game Sweet Thieves, which sees a team of Thieves trying to steal precious candy while a team of Guardians tries to guard it. Check out the trailer for the Abstergo’s Challenge below.

At the same time, on PC, the game exited Steam and became available via the Epic Games Store instead, and the storefront reaped the benefits of that switch as well. Taking recently to Twitter, Epic Games revealed that not only did Fall Guys enjoy its highest peak concurrent user count on PC to date, which was more than twice as much as its previous peak, it also led to the Epic Games Store itself enjoying a record number of active players last Tuesday.

Given the popularity of the game, it’s no surprise that its switch to free-to-play has led to even greater success. With more content coming to the battle royale title down the line, from new cosmetics to additional modes, it’s likely that that will continue for some time.

The developer recently announced via a post on Twitter that Fall Guys attracted a whopping 20 million players just within the first 48 hours of its free for all launch. That’s an incredibly impressive number, especially given the short time it took to reach it.

As for what’s next for Fall Guys, there’s some interesting stuff coming to the game in the future. June 30 will see Halo cosmetics added to the game for a limited time, while Mediatonic is also working on a stage builder for the battle royale title.

Along with crossplay and cross-progression, the free-to-play launch is a soft reboot. Season 1 is live and offers a revamped Season Pass with 100 tiers of costumes, emotes and much more to unlock. Check out the trailer below to see everything available to unlock.

The season also adds new rounds like Hex-A-Ring, Volleyfall and Speed Circuit along with new obstacles like the Jump Rope, Blast Ball and Bouncy Floors. Along with releases on other platforms, Fall Guys will support cross-platform play, cross-platform parties, and cross-progression (though you’ll need an Epic Games Store account). The Steam version is going away, but current owners are still getting all the updates and new features. On top of this, current owners on PlayStation and PC will receive the Legacy Pack with a nickname, nameplate, three costumes and the Season 1 Pass for free.

The Season 1 Pass includes 100 tiers to unlock with various rewards. Completing it results in gaining the next Season Pass for free, though there will be a free progression track. Stay tuned for more details when the game goes free-to-play tomorrow.

Fall Guys will be adding Halo cosmetics with its upcoming “Spartan Showdown” event, which will run from June 30 to July 4. Thus will include skins for the Master Chief himself, of course, as well as enemies like Brutes and Grunts. Full details haven’t yet been unveiled, but it’s likely that we’ll know more in the coming days.

Fall Guys is currently available on PS4 and PC. One June 21, the game will go free-to-play and also become available for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PS5, while on PC, it will exit Steam and become available via the Epic Games Store. On Xbox Series X, the game will run at 4K and 60 FPS. Meanwhile, a stage builder is also in the works for the game at Mediatonic.
