Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser says he is "sure" Super Mario will "will make its way" to the Nintendo Switch 2.

That there will be a new mainline 3D Super Mario platformer released for the Nintendo Switch 2 at one point pretty much goes without saying, but clearly, it’s not coming as quickly as many had thought it would. Contrary to what many expected, a new 3D Mario won’t be available for the Switch 2 at launch (or within the first few months of the console’s release), but Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser has offered assurances to allay concerns.

Speaking with CNN, when asked about the lack of Mario on Switch 2 as of now, Bowser asked fans to “stay tuned”, adding that Nintendo has a “long list of IP” that will be headed for the company’s new console at some point or another.

“Stay tuned,” Bowser said. “You know, we have a long, long catalogue and a long list of [intellectual property] that I’m sure will make its way to the platform.”

Given the fact that Super Mario Odyssey is close to eight years old, it goes without saying that demand for its successor is pretty high. Hopefully it won’t be too long before we have the next Mario game in our hands.

Meanwhile, 3D platforming fans have another major first-party Nintendo game to look forward to in the form of Donkey Kong Bananza, which is due out for the Switch 2 in July. Speculation is rife that it was developed by the Odyssey team, though Nintendo has yet to officially confirm or deny that.

Nintendo will allegedly also announce a remake of a classic SNES title at its rumoured upcoming Direct presentation.

Though Nintendo wasn’t involved in the recent flurry of events and showcases, we’ve started hearing rumblings of a Nintendo Direct that’s supposedly coming later this week. But assuming that that is indeed going to happen, what games can we expect to see, especially given previous reports that have claimed that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was going to be Nintendo’s final major release for the Switch?

Interestingly enough, Nintendo is allegedly set to announce a new 2D Super Mario platformer. That’s according to @Pyoro_ND on Twitter. In addition, the leaker has also claimed that Nintendo will announce a remake of a classic SNES title.

Though not a leaker that many might be aware of yet, they have, in recent weeks and months, had accurate leaks relating to a number of games, including Sonic Superstars, Everybody 1-2-Switch!, Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon, and the Yakuza and Judgment games.

The leaker also says that the new 2D Mario game will not be part of the New Super Mario Bros. series. Interestingly enough, this aligns with previous leaks, which claimed that a new 2D Mario game featuring a new art style was in development, and that it was set to be the beginning of a new series.

Whether or not this is accurate remains to be seen, but with recent rumours claiming that a Nintendo Direct is scheduled for sometime in the coming days, it might not be too long before we find out for sure.

"Mobile apps will not be the primary path of future Mario games," says legendary designer Shigeru Miyamoto.

Nintendo’s track record with games on mobile devices has been a little spotty, to say the very least, and that’s something that has been reflected in Mario games as well. While Mario Kart Tour got off to a strong start upon its 2019 release and still continues to be supported, other titles have been less successful, with Nintendo having confirmed that Super Mario Run performed below expectations, and Dr. Mario World getting abruptly taken down nearly a couple of years ago.

It’s unsurprising, then, that the company doesn’t see too much of a future for the property specifically where mobile devices are concerned. In a recent interview with Variety, Super Mario creator and legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto said as much. “Mobile apps will not be the primary path of future Mario games,” he said.

Miyamoto went on to talk about the development of Super Mario Run, and the challenges that it faced during development, with Nintendo looking to tailor the experience around mobile hardware and its requirements.

“Nintendo’s core strategy is a hardware and software integrated gaming experience,” he said. “The intuitiveness of the control is a part of the gaming experience. When we explored the opportunity of making Mario games for the mobile phone — which is a more common, generic device — it was challenging to determine what that game should be. That is why I played the role of director for Super Mario Run, to be able to translate that Nintendo hardware experience into the smart devices.”

Of course, Mario’s bread and butter has always been – and will likely continue to be – console games, and though there’s nothing new that has been announced yet on that front, Miyamoto has suggested that that could change in the future, having asked fans to “stay tuned for future Nintendo Directs.” Read more on that through here.

Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto suggests that a new mainline Mario game will be announced in a future Nintendo Direct.

In October this year, it’ll be six years since the launch of the last new mainline 3D Mario title, Super Mario Odyssey, and though we did see the launch of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury in 2021, fans of the franchise are beginning to wonder how long it’ll be before the next full-fledged instalment arrives, especially with The Super Mario Bros. Movie out now and excitement surrounding the franchise heating up again.

While the wait for an answer to that question continues, Nintendo mastermind Shigeru Miyamoto has dropped something of a hint for when the next Mario game might be announced. When asked about the franchise’s next instalment in a recent interview with Variety, though he was reluctant to give a concrete answer, he said, “Well, all I can say is please stay tuned for future Nintendo Directs,” accompanying the statement with a big smile.

That doesn’t narrow down the window for when the next Mario game might be announced by any means, but at least we know it’s on Nintendo’s mind now. Leaks have claimed that the Switch successor is in the works at Nintendo, with analysts expecting a launch in 2024, so the company might be holding back the next Mario title to pair its launch with its next console.

Back in November 2021, while speaking about the next Mario game, Miyamoto said Nintendo will once again try to expand the franchise in new ways.
A leak claims that the game will feature a new art style and will not be part of the New Super Mario Bros. line of games.

It’s been a while since we last got a 2D Super Mario platformer. Unless you’re counting the Super Mario Maker games, the last time Nintendo released a new mainline 2D Mario game was with New Super Mario Bros. U in 2012. Given how much time has passed, naturally, there have plenty who’ve wondered what Nintendo’s plans are for the 2D Mario series- and it seems those questions could soon be answered.

As per known Nintendo insider Zippo, the Nintendo EPD team in Kyoto is working on a new 2D Super Mario platformer. In a blog update, the leaker claims that the title is not going to be part of the New Super Mario Bros. line of games and will instead be it’s own new thing. The game will supposedly feature a new art style “that will take some people by surprise”, and include online multiplayer. Interestingly, the leaker also says Foreman Spike is going to return as a character in the game.

As per Zippo, the new Mario game is “very far along in development” and is currently targeting a launch sometime in fiscal year 2023/24 (which runs from April 2023 to March 2024). There’s no mention of when the game might be announced, but recent reports have claimed that a Nintendo Direct presentation is coming up in a few days– one would imagine that would be a good place to announce a new 2D Mario title.

Reportedly, Nintendo will also finally unveil the long-rumoured Switch ports of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD as part of the Direct presentation. Read more on that through here.

There's no telling when we'll see the next mainline 3D Super Mario game, but Nintendo veteran Shigeru Miyamoto knows expectations will be high.

There aren’t a lot of franchises out there that have delivered genre-defining instant classics as frequently and consistently as Mario has. From its inception back when the industry itself was still in its infancy right up until now, mainline Super Mario games have been setting the standards, with the series having delivered a ridiculous number of games that can legitimately vie for the “greatest of all time” throne.

It goes without saying that any new entry in a series as venerated as that will have high expectations to meet, and Nintendo is very well aware of that. During a recent Q&A following its quarterly fiscal meeting, Nintendo veteran and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto between how he weighs the differences between Super Mario’s 2D and 3D lines of games. Explaining the beginnings of the New Super Mario Bros. series and then moving on to talk about Nintendo’s philosophy for creating each new 3D Mario game, Miyamoto ended by saying that whatever the next one ends up being, it will have to expand the series further in new ways- not just so it can keep doing new things the way Super Mario games like to do, but also so that Nintendo can appeal to the sizeable audiences that enjoy these games.

“Let me explain by describing the background for the development of the Wii game New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which was released in 2009,” Miyamoto said. “At the time, it felt like each time we created a new installment in the Super Mario series — which by then had expanded into 3D — it became more complicated. After the release of Super Mario Galaxy in 2007, the goal was to develop a more accessible 3D Super Mario game, and the result was New Super Mario Bros. Wii, a basic side-scrolling Super Mario game that even new players could easily play. That later led to the release of the even simpler Super Mario Run game (a mobile application released in 2016.) When we develop software, we strive to incorporate new elements, but at the same time we want to make it easy for even first time players to have fun. Recently, people of all generations have been enjoying the 3D Mario game Super Mario Odyssey (released in 2017,) so for 3D Mario going forward, we want to try expanding further in new ways.”

Of course, the question on everyone’s mind will be, when exactly can we expect to see a new 3D Super Mario game? It’s been over four years since Super Mario Odyssey launched, and even though we did get Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury earlier this year, the demand for a full-fledged brand-new mainline 3D Mario instalment is growing.

Interestingly, rumours have insisted time and again that a new 3D Donkey Kong game is currently in development and is being made by the team that made Super Mario Odyssey. If that is true, then it might be a while before Nintendo ends up returning to its iconic mascot for another new entry.

A collection of remasters of various mainline 3D Super Mario titles has been leaked consistently over the course of this year. But in spite of having popped up in quite a few leaks and rumours from credible sources, an announcement for it hasn’t come. It wasn’t that long ago that we last heard about it, with some suggesting that it would finally be announced toward the end of August– and here we are yet again, because it’s been claimed once more that an announcement is imminent.

As per journalist Omar Al-Amoudi on True-Gaming (via VGC), the 3D Super Mario collection will be announced this week. Meanwhile, prolific Nintendo insider Emily Rogers has also suggested the same on Twitter. Responding to a person who said they would give away a free copy of the game to anyone who retweeted them if the collection does indeed get announced this week, Rogers said, “Thanks for the free copy.” Finally, GamesBeat’s Jeff Grubb has also seemingly teased the same, but in much more cryptic fashion- take a look below.

Recently, another report suggested that the collection – which allegedly includes Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy – had been delayed from its original September release (which would align with the 35th anniversary of Mario) and pushed back into December.
2020 is the year of Super Mario’s 35th anniversary, and it seems Nintendo has some big things in store for the same. Reports have emerged recently that say multiple Mario games will be coming to the Switch this year, including a new Paper Mario title and multiple mainline Super Mario re-releases. Now, reports from more sources have provided a few more details on that.

Gematsu and Eurogamer are both corroborating the aforementioned report from VGC. Among the games coming to the Switch this year as per these reports, one will be a port of the series’ Wii U outing, with Super Mario 3D World Deluxe. Meanwhile, HD remasters for Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy.

Eurogamer also backs up the reports of a new Paper Mario title, and also adds that Super Mario 3D World will include new levels that were not seen in the original Wii U release. Additionally, it is also supposedly one of a couple of Wii U games that Nintendo is planning on bringing to the Switch this year, which falls in line with previous reports.

More information should hopefully be coming in on this soon, so stay tuned for those reports.

1985 was a historic year for Nintendo, and for gaming as a whole, because that was the year when a little game know as Super Mario Bros. first came out. 2020 is the series’ 35th anniversary then, and it seems Nintendo has big things planned for the occasion.

According to VGC, multiple sources are indicating that this year, to celebrate the iconic mascot’s 35th anniversary, Nintendo will release multiple Mario titles for the Nintendo Switch. This will include a new Paper Mario game – which is something that has been in the rumour mill for a while – as well as re-releases for “most of” the Super Mario series’ back-catalog. A remaster of Super Mario 3D World has been rumoured for a while now, but this would also include games preceding that, including the likes of 3D Land, 64, Sunshine, and both Galaxy games (though VGC’s report doesn’t mention any games in particular by name).

Reportedly, Nintendo was originally planning on revealing this stuff at E3 2020, but with the show having been cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, they have had to reassess their plans. Allegedly, alongside these announcements, Nintendo will also reveal new details about its partnership with Universal, which includes the Super Nintendo World theme park and the upcoming Super Mario film. The recent collaboration between Nintendo and LEGO for Mario toys, it seems, is also part of the anniversary celebrations.

When asked for a comment on the same, Nintendo said to VGC that they do not “comment on rumour and speculation.”

Stay tuned to GamingBolt, and we’ll keep you updated as this story develops.

Only 1980s kids will remember this.

Recently in one of our features, we took a trip down memory lane and reminisced about gaming in the decade of 1990s, and we quite enjoyed it. So we figured, why not go further back? And back is where we’ll go in this feature, as we talk about some things that defined much of the industry in the 80s. Obviously, there’s a lot that the 80s and the 90s had in common, some of which we’ve already spoken about in our previous aforementioned feature, so you won’t see us repeating those things here. With all that out of the way, let’s get started.

SIDESCROLLERS

There was a time when video games were synonymous with a very particular kind of look and design- whether it was action adventure titles, shooters, platformers, or pure action games, sidescrollers dominated the scene. That was largely due to the limitations that the hardware of the time placed on game developers back then, but it surely didn’t stop developers from expressing their creativity. From Contra to Metroid to Ninja Gaiden to Super Mario Bros., these were all vastly different experiences in spite of being side-scrollers.
