Telltale Has Put Its Game of Thrones Series “On Hold”

Game of Thrones fans will remember that.

Telltale’s Game of Thrones adaptation may not have been their best foot forward, but it did well enough, and fans certainly appreciated it for what it was. Telltale, too, had enthusiastically discussed previously about how Game of Thrones would be a flagship property for them going forward.

And yet, here we are in 2017, and Telltale, while announcing new seasons for The Walking Dead, Batman, Minecraft, and even The Wolf Among Us, is not talking about Game of Thrones. Why? What happened? Speaking to Eurogamer, Telltale’s head of creative communications Job Stauffer said that the series is on hold for now.

“Not long after the conclusion of the first season we said would be continuing, and we had designs on the future of Telltale’s Game of Thrones,” Stauffer said. “Right now that is on hold. We haven’t announced it, which does not mean it’s never coming but I think right now we’re anxious to get back into Wolf, Walking Dead, and Batman and see where things go with the narrative of the [Game of Thrones] show before we really come back to the table with something we’re excited about.”

Of course, the final season of the show is set to air… next year? It actually doesn’t have a date yet. However, be that as it may, the final season is approaching- and you have to assume that Telltale will want their second take on the property out around then to capitalize on the hype, right?

“Right now we’re back into being huge Game of Thrones fans. So for us to say what will be the best follow-up to that [the first season] and when that’s going to happen, is too soon to say. We want to know what happens next in the show before we talk about the hows and whens of our return to Westeros,” he added, laughing.

So, there you have it- a new season of Game of Thrones by Telltale may come- but the way he said it, it doesn’t sound like we can expect it any time soon. Presumably it comes after the final season has aired- which I suppose gives Game of Thrones fans something to look forward to once for after the series finale.
