When you have a game full of really cool bionic and tech powers, why would you want to use the humble grenade? even if you do want to use it, it is very unhelpfully mapped to the back button, making it a real effort to reach in the middle of combat. If you manage, grenades can be helpful in creating a large explosion, but they just never seem to be in the right place at the right time. They offered such little use on account of this, that Bioware just went ahead and completely removed them in Mass Effect 2.
