Shooting games were very different before Halo came along in 2001. It may not have been the first to do this, but it was certainly the first time I saw a shooter with a dedicated melee attack, and one that was powerful at that. Shooters before then all seemed to have a separate melee weapon you needed to equip and, whatever their size or shape, they were all just as useless as each other.
