The respective resurgences of single player games and survival horror titles have very much been interlinked, and there’s plenty to look forward to on both fronts. Striking Distance Studio’s The Callisto Protocolfor instance, is a game that has generated no shortage of excitement- but as a single player game, what can we expect from its post-launch support?

According to the developer, the game is going to receive plenty of support once it’s released. Speaking with True Trophies, Striking Distance Studios’ CTO Mark James said that the developer view the upcoming survival horror title as “a full-service”, which means you can expect DLC. As per James, the game will get “a full year” of post-launch support.

“We view this as a full-service title and we will be investing in DLC,” he said. “We’re looking at a full year of support after release.”

As for what that support will entail, details remain scant on that front. James says The Callisto Protocol’s world is “expandable”, which means some of those stories could be told through expansions- though interestingly, he says they could also be told in sequels, with Striking Distance Studios hoping to turn the new IP into a franchise.

“We’ve left the world expandable,” James said. “We’ve created a world that can tell different stories, and so we can either tell those stories either through DLC, or we could actually tell those stories through subsequent products. We’ve left those open.”

“We like to think of this as a franchise — every developer when they [make a new] IP, they like to think of it as a franchise investment,” he added. ” It’s really expensive to generate a new IP, so we always want to try and get the most out of it.”

James also said that DLC could entail new modes inspired by “other survival horror”, though finishes by saying that there’s still plenty of stories to tell connected to the game that they could turn to for expansions.

“At the moment, we’ve got a linear story mode. […] We can still tell the whole story of the prison outbreak without even touching on the linear story.”

The Callisto Protocol is due out on December 2 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
