The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

Nintendo has said very little about The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom in the lead up to its launch, and with the hotly anticipated open world title set to launch in just a little under two months, fans are beginning to get more and more anxious about when new details on the game will be revealed. While a more significant blowout remains as elusive as ever, series producer Eiji Aonuma has offered some brief new insights on what to expect.

Speaking recently at the Famitsu Game Awards (via @Genki_JPN on Twitter), Aonuma said that though Tears of the Kingdom will see players traversing the Hyrule Kingdom of its predecessor, Breath of the Wild, the sequel will feature “new gameplay that will bring about changes to the game world”, while adding that players will be exploring said world in an “unknown” state.

Little to nothing has been said about Tears of the Kingdom’s map, though the assumption has been that the bulk of its new content and gameplay offerings will come courtesy of new sky-based locations and mechanics, which have been featured in the game’s trailers up until this point. Exactly how different (or not) the actual surface of the map will be from Breath of the Wild’s world remains to be seen.

Nintendo has, however, said that Tears of the Kingdom will justify its $70 price tag – which is a first for the company – thanks to “an incredibly full, deeply immersive experience”, so expectations will certainly be high (not that they wouldn’t have been stratospheric regardless).

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is due out for the Nintendo Switch on May 12.
