3. Shadow of the Colossus
When your main partner character, and the only friendly creature you make contact with in the entire game, is a horse, you know you aren’t playing a title that will get bogged down in human concerns. Indeed, the primary element of Team Ico’s epic Shadow of the Colossus was the towering colossi that roamed the land.
2. Zelda: Ocarina of Time
The weird and wonderful creatures of Hyrule have always mesmerized us since The Legend of Zelda began back in 1987, but it was only with the debut of the masterful Ocarina of Time in 1998 that we got to see the denizens of Hyrule rendered in full 3D. It was breathtaking for all seeing such a vibrant world brought to life. Oh, and did I forget to mention that it’s also probably the best game ever made? A small detail one should know.
1. Paper Mario
The whole Mario franchise is filled with a bizarre roster of different characters and species (seriously, Birdo still gives me nightmares), but it was only with Paper Mario in 2001 that we got proper insight into the various species that inhabit the mushroom kingdom. It was certainly one of the first Mario games aside from the Mario RPG on SNES to feature much dialogue but, unlike Legend of the Seven Stars, Paper Mario focused more on the classic creatures of Mario, with Goombas, Koopas, Bob-ombs and even a Boo all joining Mario in his adventure and getting a fair say. They can’t all be evil after all.
