3. Persona 3
The JRPG is a genre so well established that any deviation from the norm seems inventive and original. Imagine the shock then when Persona 3, a traditional JRPG with social simulator elements, released in 2007. Though it wasn’t the first game in the Persona series, it was the first time that the social interactions with NPCs impacted so strongly upon your combat abilities. Not just a gimmick, the system set P3 apart from other titles in the genre and helped it become one of the best RPGs of last decade.
