#2. GEARS 5
In 2006, the first Gears of War changed the industry forever, and even to this day, we see cover-based third person shooter that are basically riffing on the formula that Epic Games’ seminal game established over a decade ago. It’s a testament to just how timeless that style of gameplay was that Gears 5’s shooting, which is largely similar, still feels so incredible. Popping out of cover and gunning enemies down is slick and responsive, moving around the battlefield and looking for cover has a rhythm that cannot be found anywhere else, the active reload system is as good as ever, and every weapon is immaculately designed. On top of that, new improvements – such as Jack’s progression mechanics and the occasional environmental hazard – ensure that Gears 5 has the best, most enjoyable combat in the series- which is really saying something.
