You have to earn your keep.

With PvP gameplay playing a huge role in Ubisoft’s upcoming Tom Clancy’s The Division, there were a lot of people who were worried about permanent item loss in the game’s PvP mode, especially in the Dark Zones- something about which a lot of misinformation has been circulating recently. But Ubisoft has come out and tried to clear the air surrounding all of this.

“One thing to remember is it’s not permanent item loss. In the Dark Zone, the items you come across have something different about them. To make them permanent, you need to go through a process, which is Extraction. One you’ve successfully extracted those items, then they are permanent on your character. You still cannot lose them when you go back into the Dark Zone. The only thing you potentially can lose are these items that are not completely permanent to your character yet,” they said.

So it sounds like you can in fact secure an item for your character permanently- but you have to go through a process first. if, for instance, you were to be killed right as you had picked up a valuable item, it appears that item would be lost.

The Division does sound and look plenty promising to me, but judging by Ubisoft’s horrible track record of late, I think I will hold off on it for just a little while.
