Uncharted 2: Among Thieves can fall……………IF?

Posted By | On 20th, Sep. 2009

Before I go ahead and all of you readers go mad at me, I will like to make one point very clear. This article is not about “Uncharted 2 sucks” or “Uncharted 2 will fail miserably”. We all know very well that Among Thieves will be a major success for Sony and for the Playstation 3 and it will be a great game. But here we will like to raise a couple of points which could probably stop Uncharted 2: Among Thieves from being EPIC. Normally the line between a great game and a perfect game is pretty thin. Through this article we tell you what could stop Uncharted 2 from being a perfect game. Throughout this article I will be taking references from the original: Uncharted: Drakes Fortune.

Update: The videos in this article are no longer available.

1. Uncharted 2 needs to be longer:

Drakes Fortune was an amazing ride. In 2007 it was hands down one of the best action games I have ever played. But the thing that really put me off was the length of the game. I finished Uncharted: Drakes Fortune in about seven hours at first play and at about five hours in the second. I would like to agree that those seven hours were one of the most mind boggling times in my gaming, but come to think of it I actually paid $60 ( hard earned by sitting late nights in the office lol) for one day of entertainment. Naughty Dog would have to look in to this. I know its a bit too late to point out this, but its one of the major concern I had with the game. I guess the inclusion of Multiplayer gives me an indication that Uncharted 2: Among Thieves will be again short. A game which has the single player to be of prime element of the overall game should be at least 12 hours in length according to me. This is where I thought Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction was good at, even though it lacked multiplayer.

2. Some of the plot lines need to make sense

Agreed that Uncharted has a very strong plot about our treasure hunting hero: Nathan Drake. But some of the story just goes flat according to me. At certain point in the original Nathan Drake meets his enemy Eddy Raja. Now the developers did not cared to show a flashback on what relation they had. The game just assumes that the player will get involved in the situation and will just ignore the storyline. I guess developers need to fill these potholes in plots. Later Nathan is shown to be saving Eddy from the mutated Spaniards in a cave, although Eddy is killed in the scene, Nate is disturbed at his death. Why? Why would Drake get disturbed at a mans death who was going after his life all along the game? Beats me. I guess Naughty Dog needs to pull in some flash back elements in the game just as what MGS4: Guns of the Patriots did.

3. What actually happened after Drakes Fortune?

The ending of the original was a bit of cliffhanger for me. Navarro got his ass beaten by Drake and in the end, get his legs tangled by a rope connected to the cursed statue of El Dorado. But the thing that beats me is the statue was assumed to be very powerful in the game and its end was a bit weird to me. What happened to Navarro, did he died? What about El Dorado? It was not destroyed, its still there somewhere in the ocean. If we have a kind of similar ending in Among Thieves, it will be a tough pill to swallow.

Having said all, Among Thieves is shaping up to be a cracking sequel. The reason why I wrote this article so that the when game gets released it should not be just another great game. It should be a classic. Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
