8. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – “Can I play without my thumb?”
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a name that almost always goes hand in hand with computer use. It’s caused when the main nerve that passes over the carpal bone in the wrist is pressed or aggravated. Most commonly associated with the use of the computer mouse and even with gaming controllers. It’s also known as WASD Syndrome or Gamer’s Thumb amongst other names.
Having to hold a mouse or a game controller at odd angles for a extended amounts of time means that the Carpal Tunnel area, which is where the main nerves and tendons of the hand are housed, become swollen. Using ergonomic mice and controllers isn’t always possible so it’s best that to flex your hand and wrist every now and then while you get down to punch that fire button because treatment for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome may require to immobilise your thumb and even otherwise, it’s just too nasty a bother to deal with. Don’t let it happen.
